Archetypes
The Soul: Blood is an archetypal symbol of the soul. It represents the the life energy between a vampire and a human. Vampires represent the un-dead soul, and human represent the living soul.
The Hero: The hero is someone who is brave and on a mission to triumph over evil. The Crew of Light (Harker, Helsing,Quincey, Dr. Seward, Holmwood) are the heroes, because they are brave enough to triumph over evil (killing Dracula).
The Villain: The villain is someone or something that tries to prevent the hero from succeeding and terrorizes other. In the novel, Dracula is the villain, because tries to prevent the Crew of Light from destroying his coffins, and he terrorizes others by drinking his victim's blood supply.
The Maiden: The maiden is normally a woman who falls victim to the villain. In the novel, Lucy is the maiden. She is innocent and carefree, thus, she falls victim to Dracula, and transforms into a vampire. In the end, she demises in the story.
The Lover: The lover is normally a person who is surrounded by the people they love and is in a committed relationship. Arthur is an example of the lover. He is surrounded by people who care about him. He is in a committed relationship with his fiancée, Lucy, and tried to help her recover from her "illness". He made a difficult decision to kill Lucy's vampire form, because he loved her dearly and did not want her soul to suffer.
The Caregiver: The caregiver is someone who protects and care for others. Dr. Seward and Dr. Helsing fit this description, because Dr. Seward tries to take care of Lucy and Renfield by giving transfusions for Lucy and helping Renfield survive after being attacked by Dracula for disobedience. Dr. Helsing tries to protect Lucy, Mina and everyone by giving them holy objects, garlic, destroying Dracula's coffin and killing Dracula.
The Sage: The sage is someone who provides knowledge to the heroes; a wise man. Helsing is a sage, because he provides knowledge to the characters and readers about vampires. He is also a professor; a wise man.
The Mother: The mother is a person who is or acts like a mother figure. Mina is an example of the mother, because when Lucy becomes ill, she tries her best to take care of her, just like how a mother takes care of a child.
